Dear Parliamentarians & Candidates,
Prices for new medicines in The Netherlands are skyrocketing so quickly that we will soon be unable to afford to treat our sick.
But as prices skyrocket and our insurance premiums rise, the pharmaceutical industry continues to ignore calls for greater public scrutiny of their price increases.
We can’t let this happen.
We support our politicians to take the following steps to make the pharmaceutical industry more transparent:
1. MAKE MEDICINE PRICES PUBLIC INFORMATION
Making the real price paid for medicines publicly available will create a level playing field between governments and hospitals buying the medicines and the industry selling them.
2. DEMAND TRANSPARENCY OF THE TRUE COST OF RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT (R&D) OF NEW MEDICINES
The real costs of R&D remain unknown, but the pharmaceutical industry frequently gives these costs as reasons for charging exorbitant prices when a new medicine comes onto the market.
3. TRACK AND TRACE PUBLIC FUNDING OF R&D SO WE STOP PAYING TWICE FOR OUR MEDICINES
About 80% of all funds for basic research for medicines and about 30-40% of all global R&D for health is publicly funded.
